If I had to guess, based on teenage logic, this was someone else's car (dad's? brother'?) and he wasn't supposed to be starting it. His first thoughts are 'oh shit, I'm in trouble, hide the evidence'.

This is what happens when you show off too early. The first time I started the Willys after hooking everything up, smoke started billowing out and I realized "oh shit, forgot to torque down one of the heads". Luckily that's not on film.
